Only cache the generation ID, this is to make device hot-add easier to
implement in the future, and also avoid having to take the lock in

For Cardboard usage, we expect the returned screen size to be landscape.
However, it is possible that the screen is still in portrait mode when
getDisplayMetrics is called, which causes the width and height to be swapped.
Ensure that the width and height always represent the screen's size in landscape mode.
(An alternative method for this would be to check for the screen
rotation and rotate if the screen is in ROTATION_0 or ROTATION_180,
but on some devices (foldables and some tablets?) ROTATION_0/180
does not necessarily imply landscape. If it turns out that these
devices need to return the portrait orientation here, that could be
changed. On all other devices, there should be no functional difference.)
