🕶️ 3D side-by-side videos: some 3D videos reach your browser with both eyes in one frame. Pick 180° 3D side by side (VR180) or Cinema 3D side by side (regular 3D videos on the cinema screen) in the Format menu, and each eye gets its own half, in real 3D. The glass panels and the screen's glow follow each eye too. Thanks to @damics80 for asking for it and u/TehSuperFruitSnack for spotting the VR180 ones!
-
💎 YouTube Premium in VR:
- 1080p Premium (the enhanced bitrate) in the Quality menu.
- Jump ahead at the end of the seek bar whenever YouTube offers it, taking you to the part most viewers skip to.
Both are marked with the Diamond.
-
👥 Your channels: You → Channels lists the channels you subscribe to. Sort them your way (Most relevant, New activity, A-Z) and click one to open it in the Channel panel. Channels you're a member of are flagged.
-
🔔 The notification bell: on a channel you subscribe to, choose All, Personalized or None right from the Channel panel.
-
🎚️ A tidier Format menu: every format with its own icon (2D, 3D, 360°, cubemap, 180°, 180° 3D), and the Format button shows the one you picked.
🩹 Fixes
- Videos open from the Channel panel and History even when VR started on a channel page.
- Floating menus no longer cover the pointing ring of the row next to the selected one.
- The Channels list loads all the way down.
🗺️ Roadmap
Next up: Add to queue, Explore's "Coming Soon" tabs and commenting in VR, then the Chrome Web Store release as StreamXR 1.0. After that: Twitch, Jellyfin and Plex, music streaming, and an experimental mode for videos on any site. The full roadmap is in the README.
⬆️ Updating
Download the source code below and replace your StreamXR folder, then go to
chrome://extensionsand click Reload on StreamXR. Reload your YouTube tab too, since an open tab keeps running the old version. Your settings are kept. The optional Skip Helper hasn't changed.Full list of changes: CHANGELOG.md

- 💬 Live chat: on a live stream, the chat opens on the right and stays up while you watch. Read it with emojis, badges, Super Chats and the pinned message, tap the stream's reactions (❤ 😄 🎉), and type messages on the VR keyboard, which now has emoji pages (with your channel's member emojis). A Support on desktop button points you to YouTube's window for Super Chats and memberships.
- 🏆 Top fans: your XP in the chat, the ranked list of the stream's top fans, and the top three's #1 / #2 / #3 pills.
- ⏪ Chat replays: on a finished stream that kept its chat, the chat plays along with the video. It pauses when you pause and follows when you jump back or ahead.
- ✋ Move the side panels: grip the grab bar beside either side's toolbar and put that side where you like. Recentering keeps it there, unless you turn on Settings → Safe zone → Recenter resets panels.
- 👆 Hide everything in one pull (suggested by u/TehSuperFruitSnack): pull the trigger on empty space and the panels, toolbars and search bar go away at once. Pull again to bring them back.
- ⏸️ Auto-hide while paused (suggested by u/TehSuperFruitSnack too), in Settings → Auto-hide: pause and soak in a 180° / 360° scene with nothing in the way (off by default).
- 🎚️ Quality menu icons: each quality shows its 4K / Full HD / HD (and 60 fps) icons, as the Quality button does.
- 🖐️ Clearer controller icons: the grip shows a hand when it will grab something, and the left D-pad shows a panel icon for show / hide.
🩹 Fixes
- The chat tries again on its own when YouTube's page hasn't loaded it yet, instead of showing "Couldn't load the chat".
- Typing in the chat and then clicking the search bar no longer shows two text cursors.
- Long dialog messages are no longer cut off.
🥽 Headsets
- Meta Quest 2 reported working through SteamVR, 8K videos included. Thank you, u/TehSuperFruitSnack! Its controllers show as Steam Frame models for now.
- Got another headset? Tell me how it goes in a Headset / controller compatibility issue.
🧪 Help test the live chat
Some chat features haven't been caught on a real stream yet: Super Chats and Stickers, memberships and gifts, owner / moderator badges, deleted and pinned messages, member emojis in a message you send, a chat you can't type in, and an ad during a chat replay. If you see one in VR, please tell me whether it looked right: the README's "How you can help" has the details.

YouTube, all around you. 🎬✨ This is the first public release of StreamXR, a free and open-source Chrome extension that turns YouTube into a full VR experience on your Steam Frame. 360° and VR180 videos wrap around you, regular videos play on a giant cinema screen, and you can browse, search, subscribe, like, save and read comments without ever taking your headset off.
🌟 What's inside
- 🎥 Every kind of video: 360° and VR180 (detected automatically), and a cinema screen you can curve, resize and push away, with rounded corners and an ambient glow. Ultrawide and IMAX ratios fill it just like in the theater. 🎞️
- 🎛️ A controls panel made for VR: a seek bar with chapters, preview frames and YouTube's Most Replayed curve; quality up to 8K and 60 fps, speed, volume, 💬 captions, 🔖 Save, Subscribe, Like, playlists and live streams.
- 🗂️ Panels around the video, never on top of it: Description, Comments and Channel on the left; Up Next, Explore and You on the right; 🔎 Search above, with a VR keyboard.
- 🚀 Start from any page: a VR button in YouTube's top bar, so you can jump in from Home and pick something to watch right inside VR.
- 🎨 Make it yours: YouTube or Material 3 colors, glass panels, panel size, the Safe Zone, auto-hide timing, laser steadiness, keyboard layout.
- 🌍 English and Español, with more languages welcome (no coding needed).
- 🔒 Private by design: one permission (youtube.com), no servers, no analytics, no tracking.
🚀 Get started
- Under Assets below, download Source code (zip) and unzip it somewhere it can stay.
- Open
chrome://extensions, turn on Developer mode, click Load unpacked and pick the unzipped folder. - Start SteamVR on your PC.
- On the Steam Frame: Streaming Status → your PC → Advanced → Stream VR without game.
- Open Chrome, click the 🥽 VR button on YouTube, then Enter VR. 🍿
Full guide: Get started · Stuck? Quick troubleshooting
⏩ Want to skip ads from inside VR? Also load the
skip-helperfolder: it's a tiny optional extension (why it's separate). YouTube Premium members don't need it.🩹 Good to know
This is early access: it already works every day (I know because I've used it every day!), but it's still growing fast. Tested on Windows + Chrome + SteamVR + Valve Steam Frame (streamed from your PC) only; other headsets are untested, and running natively in the Frame's own browser is on the roadmap. StreamXR reads YouTube's own page, so when YouTube changes something, a feature can break for a while. See the Known issues.
🙏 Tell me what you think
Found a bug, or have an idea? Open an issue: there's a form for every kind of problem. Click 🥽 → Details → Copy details and paste it in. And if you make something cool in VR, share it with #StreamXR! 💚
Free and open source, forever. No paywalls, no ads, no "pro" version.
