• v0.1.6 9d2cb93f2d

DieMitchell released this 2026-10-17 09:01:29 +02:00 | 0 commits to main since this release

    What's new

    • No more lost sound followed by a freeze. If your audio output stopped taking sound for a
while, the game's sound stopped for good, and the game later froze, for example on the save
screen after an event. Every version so far had this. Now the game keeps running, unheard, and
the sound comes back as soon as the output takes audio again. Thanks to Omega3komma3 for the
report and the two bug reports (issue #20).
    • No more rectangular borders in the Showcase (where you rotate and zoom around a car, in the
car lot, the customize shop and on a Blacklist rival's car) or around a Blacklist rival's
      bio.
The Showcase's darkened edges and the bio's black panel now reach the edges of the
screen, on every screen shape; on a 16:9 screen they left a thin border, as on an Xbox 360,
whose TV hid it, and on a MacBook or a Steam Deck a wide one at the top and bottom. Thanks to
DoubleDips, who reported it, and m9cy884mv6-a11y, who confirmed it on the Steam Deck (issue #19).
    • Mac: in a window, the picture now runs up under a transparent title bar, and the window's
buttons show only while you move the mouse over it. Thanks to aleszczynskig, who wrote it (pull
      request #23).
    • Mac: no more crash when switching fullscreen on a 120 Hz screen. On a MacBook Pro's ProMotion
screen, switching fullscreen on or off, or resizing the window, could close the game now and then
(since v0.1.4; its crash report named "mutex lock failed"). It no longer does.
    • A quit asked for from outside the game is now a normal quit: the stop signal a launcher
sends, Ctrl+C, or closing the terminal the game was started from. Your settings are saved, as
with Quit Game. Closing its terminal used to end it on the spot, and every session, even one
ended with Quit Game, left a crash marker in its logs folder until the next start.

    How to update

    • Mac: drag the new SpeedBreaker into Applications and choose Replace, then allow it once more with Open Anyway (System Settings > Privacy & Security).
    • Steam Deck, Steam Machine, Steam Frame and Linux: unpack the new download over the old folder (~/Games/SpeedBreaker). Your Steam shortcut keeps working.
    • Everywhere: your saves, settings and the installed game are kept, and no disc image is needed.

    More about it

    • The sound: SpeedBreaker keeps the game's sound in step with your audio output, and when the
output stopped taking audio altogether, the game's sound waited for it for good; the game's own
sound system then stopped too, and the next time it waited for a sound to unload, the game froze.
Reproduced by stopping the output in the middle of a race; with the fix the game played on and
the sound came back when the output did. The log now says when the output stopped taking audio
and when it came back, and a hang report includes the audio's state.
    • The borders: the few black frames between two shots of the career's opening scene are now
black to the edges of the screen too.
    • The title bar: the window's saved size now takes in the title bar, so a window from an
earlier version opens a title bar shorter, with the same picture.
    • The 120 Hz crash: the thread that times the frames on a ProMotion screen could still be using
the old swapchain while a fullscreen switch replaced it. On the MacBook Pro where it was seen,
v0.1.5 crashed in 1 of 11 test runs of rapid fullscreen switching and resizing; with the fix,
none did in 15 runs (39 minutes), including runs made to hit the problem more often.
    • Quitting: a crash still saves a crash report, and the next start still offers it. A session
that ended without quitting (stopped by force, or the power going) now leaves its marker, and
the next start's log says so.

iPhone and iPad (experimental) SpeedBreaker-0.1.6-ios.ipa, or build it yourself with Xcode iPhone and iPad
    Windows and Android Coming soon

The two SteamOS files are not interchangeable: the arm64 one is for the Steam Frame only, and the
x86-64 one doesn't run on the Frame. Each download has a .sha256 file next to it (see Checksums
    below).

All downloads are built from this release's source, commit 9d2cb93. The first line of the
game's log, and Settings > Advanced, say SpeedBreaker v0.1.6 (9d2cb93).

The Source code archives that GitHub adds hold SpeedBreaker's own source, with no game code or
data. Building from them needs your own disc; see
    Building from source.

iPhone and iPad: the experimental IPA

SpeedBreaker-0.1.6-ios.ipa is signed by nobody: a sideloading tool such as AltStore signs it
with your own Apple Account and installs it. The IPA itself hasn't been installed on a device
    yet
: the iPhones and iPad it was tested on ran the same app built and signed with Xcode. Please
report how it goes, working or not, with your device and tool.

    • The game asks iOS for more memory than most apps (two entitlements: Extended Virtual Addressing
and Increased Memory Limit). A free Apple Account can give at most the second, and only with
some tools: AltStore Classic 2.2 or later is expected to keep it; SideStore 0.7 drops both.
Without them the game may not start, or iOS may close it in busy scenes. When iOS refuses the
memory, the game says so on screen instead of closing.
    • A free Apple Account's apps stop opening after 7 days until the tool refreshes them, and at most
3 sideloaded apps can be active at once. These are Apple's limits.
    • iOS or iPadOS 17 or later, on an A15-class chip or newer, with a controller or keyboard.
    • Coming from a build you made yourself, the IPA installs as a separate app: install the game again
from your disc image. Saves made in the old app stay with it.
    • Sideloading the IPA
has the steps and which tools keep what. Building it yourself with Xcode still works as before.

    How these downloads were tested

Each download attached here was tested before release. It was unpacked or opened as the setup
steps say, with a fresh home folder, and the game was installed through the installer from a disc
    image:

    • x86-64: on a Steam Machine (SteamOS 3.8). The game raced at 60 fps, with the default upscaling
and with FSR 1. Stopped with SIGTERM (the signal a launcher normally sends), it quit cleanly, kept a
setting changed just before, and the next start reported no crash. In a 60 Hz display test, no frame jumped ahead or
      froze.
    • arm64: on a Steam Frame (SteamOS 0.3.0), outside the headset. The game raced at 58.7 fps with
Xbox 360 Display Gamma on, no frame froze and the game's speed was unchanged; stopped with
SIGTERM, it quit cleanly with its settings saved, and FSR 1, the Controls page,
Quit Game and the Fullscreen setting worked as in v0.1.5.
    • Mac: on a MacBook Pro (M1 Pro, macOS 27.0.1). The game raced at about 60 fps, also with
Upscaling set to FSR 1. In a window, the title bar sits over the picture and the window kept its
size through two trips into fullscreen and back. Quit Game, the Controls page and Check for
Updates worked, and quitting from outside the game left no crash marker. On macOS 15.6.1
(Sequoia), in a virtual machine on a Mac Studio, it installed and raced at about 60 fps in
      fullscreen.
    • Updating from v0.1.5: on a Steam Machine, a Steam Frame and a Mac, v0.1.6 went over a working v0.1.5
the way How to update says: the game used the existing install without reinstalling it, showed
What's new once, and kept the settings.
    • iPhone and iPad IPA: built and checked (its version, its two entitlements, its license notices, no personal
data), but not installed on a device yet; see above.

    say OK.

    Known issues and limits

    • Mac, the first time you open it: the app isn't notarized by Apple, so macOS refuses to
open it and offers Done or Move to Trash. Click Done. Then go to System Settings >
Privacy & Security, scroll down to the message that SpeedBreaker was blocked, click Open
      Anyway
, and confirm with Open Anyway and your password (or Touch ID). After that it opens
      normally.
      • The Open Anyway button only stays there for about an hour after the refusal. If it's gone,
        open the app again.
      • You do this once per download, so once more after each update. Control-click > Open no
        longer skips it.
      • The app isn't damaged. If macOS ever says it is, check the download against its .sha256 and
        download it again.
      • Apple silicon only, macOS 15 or later.
    • macOS 15 Sequoia was tested in a virtual machine, not yet on a real Mac. If you play on
macOS 15, a short report in the issues, working or not, with your Mac's model, would help a lot.
    • Mac frame pacing was measured on a MacBook Pro (M1 Pro) with its 120 Hz ProMotion screen, in
fullscreen. Other 120 Hz screens (other Macs, external displays) and windowed play weren't
measured; a frame that isn't ready in time is shown when it is, as before.
    • A Brightness slider moved before v0.1.4: if you moved the game's own slider in an earlier
version (where it did nothing) and the game has saved since, v0.1.4 and later use that setting
from the main menu on. At maximum the picture is much brighter and washed out, as on a 360 with that save.
In the pause menu > Options > Video, set the slider back to the middle, or press Y (Defaults) and
choose Yes. Settings > Display > Brightness doesn't undo it.
    • Steam Deck OLED: set the refresh rate to 60 Hz (Quick Access > Performance). At 90 Hz
the game stutters. Leave the Framerate Limit off. The Steam Deck LCD hasn't been tested yet.
    • Game Mode on Steam Deck and Steam Machine:
      • Browse for image... may not open in Game Mode. Use the image the installer found instead:
it is highlighted, so press A, then A again on Install. If it found more than one
(for example one in Downloads and one on the SD card), pick yours with Up and Down first.
      • Choose a folder... opens its folder picker only in Desktop Mode. Pick the folder there, or
run ~/Games/SpeedBreaker/speedbreaker.sh --install <image> --dest <folder> from Konsole. Use
a folder on the internal storage or on a card formatted by SteamOS, or Game Mode won't find
        the game.
      • Game Mode only sees SD cards and USB drives formatted by SteamOS. For others, copy the image
        into Downloads from Desktop Mode.
      • Docked, or on a Steam Machine, set the shortcut's Game Resolution to Native.
    • Steam Frame: it plays as a big flat screen in the headset; it is not a VR mode. Set Display >
Frame Rate to 30 fps for smooth play (the headset's compositor shares the graphics chip; the
game keeps its full speed). The Frame's file manager can't unpack the download: use the Konsole
command in the setup steps. Since v0.1.2 the game needs a current SteamOS on the Frame (September
2026 or later): if it says GLIBCXX_3.4.34 not found, update SteamOS.
    • Linux:
      • Always start it with speedbreaker.sh. Started on its own, the program in lib/ fails on
most systems with a message such as GLIBC_2.44 not found.
      • The x86-64 download is tested here on SteamOS. Players reported v0.1.1 working on Fedora 44
with a GeForce GTX 1080 Ti and on Ubuntu 24.04 with Intel Arc graphics (issue #2).
The dedicated-GPU choice on two-GPU laptops hasn't been tried on a real laptop here yet: a
note with your laptop's [video] Vulkan devices: log line would help.
      • Choose a folder... needs a file chooser portal or zenity; without one, install with
        --dest.
      • It needs a CPU with AVX2 (Intel Haswell, AMD Excavator or Zen, or newer) and Vulkan 1.2
        graphics.
    • iPhone and iPad: the IPA is experimental and hasn't been installed on a device yet (see
above). On the iPhone 18 Pro Max, long sessions on a charger get it hot even at 1x, and Frame
Rate Auto then drops to 30.
    • Going back to v0.1.4 works, but if you change a setting there, it forgets the keys set on
the Controls page: back in v0.1.5 or later they are the defaults again.
    • Game versions: only the USA (NTSC-U) Xbox 360 disc is supported. PAL and Japanese discs,
re-releases, Games on Demand packages and the PC version aren't, and no title update is used.
    • Not in this release: importing Xbox 360 saves, controller button remapping, mouse control in the game,
more than 60 fps (the game's own cap), and Android builds. Windows is coming soon.

    Reporting a bug

    1. Open the settings (F1; Back + Start on a controller; on a Steam Deck hold View and press Menu;
on a Steam Frame press Menu + View; a three-finger tap on iPhone and iPad), go to
Advanced and choose Save Bug Report.
    2. A notice says where the zip file went: usually your Desktop (on SteamOS, pick it up in Desktop
Mode, or in the Desktop app on a Steam Frame), or the SpeedBreaker folder in the Files app on
iPhone and iPad. Its name says which version you're running, for example
speedbreaker-bug-report-v0.1.6-<date>_<time>.zip. Nothing is uploaded, and nothing is
checked online unless you press Check for Updates.
    3. Check the open issues first. Then
open a new issue, attach the zip, and say which device and download you use, what you were
doing, what you expected, what happened, and roughly how long into the session it happened.
If the game crashed, start it again and save a report: the crash report is included.

Never attach game files or disc images to an issue.

    What's new

    • Settings > Controls: every keyboard control can be reassigned, and each control has two keys.
Choose a row, Left or Right for its first or second key, press A or Enter, then the new key; Y
clears a key, X puts a row's defaults back, Reset page the whole table. The default keys are
unchanged (the arrows steer as well as A and D), and the left stick click gets a key of its own,
      Z. Thanks to love-gamer, who wrote it (pull request #12).
    • Settings > Graphics > Upscaling has a third choice, FSR 1 (AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 1),
for a window much larger than the Internal Resolution (1x on a 1440p, MacBook or 4K screen):
curves, wires and diagonals stay smooth where bicubic shows steps, such as lamp posts against
the sky or the speedometer's needle. It is used only when the picture is enlarged. Bicubic stays
the default. Not on iPhone and iPad.
    • The race results screen no longer shows a thin strip of the race above and below it. An Xbox
360 draws that strip too, and a TV of the time hid it past the edge of its screen; today's
screens show the whole picture, so it is now black, on every screen shape (Steam Deck, 16:9 and
      others).

Your keyboard keys start as they were; Settings > Controls changes them.

    More about it

    • The Controls page: the keys are saved by name in settings.toml's [keys] table (w,
left_shift, none). F1, Esc (it cancels a wait) and the Cmd and Windows keys can't be
      assigned.
    • FSR 1: Sharpening sets its sharpening pass too (0.3 of its full strength by default).
Bicubic stays the default because FSR 1 makes foliage look a little painted, costs more GPU time
(measured: about +0.5 ms a frame at 1280x800 to +2.8 ms at 4K on an M1 Pro; +0.1 to +0.3 ms on a
Steam Machine), and with Internal Resolution on Auto most screens aren't enlarged at all. At
1280x800, the Steam Deck's size, it made no visible difference in tests.
    • The results screen: two real Xbox 360 recordings of the same race's results screen show the
strip too, ten rows at the top and bottom of a 1080p capture. Blacking it is a choice for today's
screens, not a fix of a difference from the console.

    How these downloads were tested

Each download attached here was tested before release. It was unpacked or opened as the setup
steps say, with a fresh home folder, and the game was installed through the installer from a disc
    image:

    • x86-64: on a Steam Machine (SteamOS 3.8). The game raced at 60 fps, with the default upscaling
and with Upscaling set to FSR 1 (1x enlarged to 1440p), and Settings > Controls opened with each
control's two keys. Quit Game, the Fullscreen setting and Xbox 360 Display Gamma behaved as in
v0.1.4. In a 60 Hz display test, no frame jumped ahead or froze.
    • arm64: on a Steam Frame (SteamOS 0.3.0), outside the headset. The game raced at 58.8 fps with
Xbox 360 Display Gamma on and the game's speed unchanged; with Upscaling set to FSR 1 it raced
at 60 fps without errors, the new Controls page opened, and Quit Game and the Fullscreen
      setting worked as in v0.1.4.
    • Mac: on a MacBook Pro (M1 Pro, macOS 27.0.1). The game raced at about 60 fps, also with
Upscaling set to FSR 1, and Quit Game, the Controls page and Check for Updates worked. On macOS
15.6.1 (Sequoia), in a virtual machine on a Mac Studio, it installed and raced at about 60 fps
(in one of three runs, the virtual machine's own graphics driver stopped the game late in a
race; real Macs don't use that driver).
    • Updating from v0.1.4: on a Steam Machine, a Steam Frame and a Mac, v0.1.5 went over a working v0.1.4
the way How to update says: the game used the existing install without reinstalling it, showed
What's new once, and kept the settings.
    • iPhone and iPad IPA: built and checked (its version, its two entitlements, its license notices, no personal
data), but not installed on a device yet; see above.

    • Going back to v0.1.4 works, but if you change a setting there, it forgets the keys set on
the Controls page: back in v0.1.5 they are the defaults again.

    1. Open the settings (F1; Back + Start on a controller; on a Steam Deck hold View and press Menu;
on a Steam Frame press Menu + View; a three-finger tap on iPhone and iPad), go to
Advanced and choose Save Bug Report.
    2. A notice says where the zip file went: usually your Desktop (on SteamOS, pick it up in Desktop
Mode, or in the Desktop app on a Steam Frame), or the SpeedBreaker folder in the Files app on
iPhone and iPad. Its name says which version you're running, for example
speedbreaker-bug-report-v0.1.5-<date>_<time>.zip.

    What's new

    • The picture now matches a real Xbox 360 on a TV: slightly deeper shadows and slightly brighter
mid-tones. The game sets a gamma ramp for the console's TV output, and SpeedBreaker never
applied it until now. The new Settings > Display > Xbox 360 Display Gamma is on by
      default
, also after an update. To get the previous, flatter look back, turn it off.
    • Settings > Display > Brightness: lighter or darker shadows and mid-tones, from -5 to +5, a
gentle step at a time, like a TV's brightness. Black and white stay put, and only the game's
picture changes, never the menus. At 0, the default, it leaves the picture as it is.
    • The game's own Brightness slider (pause menu > Options > Video) now changes the picture as
you move it, as on an Xbox 360. It needs Settings > Display > Xbox 360 Display Gamma, which is on
by default; with that off it does nothing, as before. If you moved the slider in an earlier
version and the game has saved since, that brightness now takes effect (see Known issues).
      Thanks to m9cy884mv6-a11y (issue #18).
    • Keyboard: the right stick has keys, O and L for up and down, K and ; for left and right. The
game shifts gears with the right stick, so you can now shift from the keyboard and finish a drag
race. Thanks to love-gamer, who wrote it (pull request #11).
    • Settings > Quit Game, at the bottom of the menu after Close: quits SpeedBreaker with a
controller, the mouse or the keyboard, so a fullscreen game no longer needs a keyboard shortcut
to leave. It asks first, with Cancel chosen, so no single press quits. Not on iPhone and iPad,
where apps are closed from the app switcher.
    • Settings > Display > Fullscreen now decides how the game starts, every time. On a Mac, the
window's green button (or Ctrl+Cmd+F) switches fullscreen until you quit, so the game no longer
sometimes starts fullscreen and sometimes not.
    • Mac: the mouse pointer no longer sits over the game. It hides after two seconds without
moving while you play, and comes back as soon as you move the mouse; in the settings menu and
the installer it stays (issue #15). Thanks to DoubleDips for the report.
    • Mac: smoother frame pacing. The game's 60 Hz clock now keeps time on macOS (it ran up to 9 ms
late), and on a MacBook Pro's 120 Hz ProMotion screen each frame now follows the last by 1/60 s
instead of arriving whenever the GPU finished it. Other screens show frames as before, and the
timing turns itself off if a screen doesn't keep it.
    • On slow GPUs, below 15 fps, the game no longer runs a few percent slow: its clock now keeps
up with the screen (a laptop with Intel graphics at Internal Resolution 1.5x, about 12 fps, ran
      4% slow).
    • No stray "EVENT HANDLER" label: changing the window's shape while a movie plays (for example
the green button during the opening movie) no longer shows it above the picture.

Xbox 360 Display Gamma is on after the update; Settings > Display turns it off.

    More about it

    • The gamma ramp: the game sets it when it starts, and the console applies it to every frame
on its way to the TV. Two real Xbox 360 recordings of the intro movie and the title screen match
it to within half a level, against about two levels without it. With Xbox 360 Display Gamma off
and Brightness at 0, the picture is exactly the one of v0.1.3.
    • The game's slider: the game writes a new gamma ramp for each step, and SpeedBreaker applies it
on that frame. At its lowest, its default and its highest, the picture's average brightness
moves by about -13, +1 and +24 levels (of 255) against Xbox 360 Display Gamma off. The game keeps
the slider in your alias's save the next time it saves the profile; without an alias it starts
      at the middle every time.
    • The right-stick keys: holding both keys of a pair centres the stick. No other key changed.
    • Fullscreen: a switch the game didn't ask for (on a Mac, the green button or Ctrl+Cmd+F) lasts until you
quit and never changes the setting. While the window differs from the setting, Settings >
Display > Fullscreen says NOW FULLSCREEN or NOW WINDOWED; choosing On or Off there saves it and
      switches the window.
    • The pointer hides only over the game's window, so in a window it still shows over the
desktop, and the mouse is never captured.
    • The pacing: macOS let the thread that drives the game's 60 Hz clock wake up to 9 ms late; it
now runs with real-time priority. And a ProMotion screen shows each frame as soon as it's ready,
so frames that took a little longer to draw arrived unevenly: SpeedBreaker now asks for each
frame to be shown at a set time after its tick. Measured on a MacBook Pro (M1 Pro) in fullscreen:
99.9% of frames 1/60 s apart in menus and about 94% while driving (99-100% on the open road, less
in the heaviest scenes, where a frame takes longer than the time allowed), against about a
quarter without it, for about 5 ms more latency. On any other screen, or once the game's clock
has locked to the display, frames are shown when ready, as in v0.1.3.
    • The slow clock: when a frame took longer than six screen refreshes, SpeedBreaker started its
count over and dropped up to three refreshes of game time each time; below 15 fps that happened
every second or so. That time is now given back over the next frames. Above 20 fps nothing
changes. Checked by replaying frame timings recorded on that laptop: game time went from 96% to
      99.9% of real time.
    • The label belongs to a menu the game keeps just above the picture. After a window change
mid-movie the game kept the old window's layout for it, so the label slipped into view; it now
gets the new layout at once.

The full list of changes is in CHANGELOG.md.

The two SteamOS files are not interchangeable: the arm64 one is for the Steam Frame only, and the
x86-64 one doesn't run on the Frame. Each download has a .sha256 file next to it (see Checksums
    below).

All downloads are built from this release's source, commit d4c206a. The first line of the
game's log, and Settings > Advanced, say SpeedBreaker v0.1.4 (d4c206a).

The Source code archives that GitHub adds hold SpeedBreaker's own source, with no game code or
data. Building from them needs your own disc; see
    Building from source.

iPhone and iPad: the experimental IPA

SpeedBreaker-0.1.4-ios.ipa is signed by nobody: a sideloading tool such as AltStore signs it
with your own Apple Account and installs it.

The game raced at 60 fps with Xbox 360 Display Gamma on
by default and the car's hard shadow on the barrier beside it. Settings > Quit Game asked first
and quit cleanly with the keyboard and with a controller, also in a Game Mode (gamescope)
session, and a fullscreen switch the game didn't ask for left the Fullscreen setting as it was.
In a 60 Hz display test, no frame jumped ahead or froze.
    • arm64: on a Steam Frame (SteamOS 0.3.0), outside the headset. The game raced at 58.6 fps with sunlit
roads and the car's hard shadow, with Xbox 360 Display Gamma on by default; no frame froze and
the game's speed was unchanged. Quit Game asked first and closed the game cleanly.
    • Mac: on a MacBook Pro (M1 Pro, macOS 27.0.1). The game raced at about 60 fps with Xbox 360 Display
Gamma on by default, and Quit Game, the Fullscreen setting and Check for Updates worked. In
fullscreen on its 120 Hz ProMotion screen it raced at 60 fps with the new frame pacing on. On
macOS 15.6.1 (Sequoia), in a virtual machine on a Mac Studio, it installed and raced at about
      60 fps in fullscreen.
    • Updating from v0.1.3: on a Steam Machine, a Steam Frame and a Mac, v0.1.4 went over a working v0.1.3 the
way How to update says: the game used the existing install without reinstalling it, showed
What's new once, kept the settings, and started with Xbox 360 Display Gamma on.
    • iPhone and iPad IPA: built and checked (its version, its two entitlements, its license notices, no personal
data), but not installed on a device yet; see above.

note with your laptop's [video] Vulkan devices: log line would help.
    • Going back to v0.1.3 works, but if you change a setting there, it forgets Brightness and Xbox
360 Display Gamma: back in v0.1.4 they are at their defaults again (0 and on).
    • Game versions: only the USA (NTSC-U) Xbox 360 disc is supported. PAL and Japanese discs,
re-releases, Games on Demand packages and the PC version aren't, and no title update is used.
    • Not in this release: importing Xbox 360 saves, button remapping, mouse control in the game,
more than 60 fps (the game's own cap), and Android builds. Windows is coming soon.

    Reporting a bug

    1. Open the settings (F1; Back + Start on a controller; on a Steam Deck hold View and press Menu;
on a Steam Frame press Menu + View; a three-finger tap on iPhone and iPad), go to
Advanced and choose Save Bug Report.
    2. A notice says where the zip file went: usually your Desktop (on SteamOS, pick it up in Desktop
Mode, or in the Desktop app on a Steam Frame), or the SpeedBreaker folder in the Files app on
iPhone and iPad. Its name says which version you're running, for example
speedbreaker-bug-report-v0.1.4-<date>_<time>.zip.

    What's new

    • Smoother driving: no more small hitch every few seconds (the car jumped ahead, then stood
still for a frame or two), which frame-time graphs didn't show (GitHub issue #9). Thanks to
      m9cy884mv6-a11y for the careful report.
    • Sun shadows of cars, walls and tunnel roofs: cars now cast their hard shadow in sunlight, and
walls, barriers and tunnel roofs shade the road and the cars, as on the Xbox 360. Inside tunnels
the car no longer flickers between sunlight and tree shadows (GitHub issue #3). Thanks to the
players who reported the flicker on GitHub and the missing car shadows on Reddit.
    • Nitrous light trails are now as long as on the Xbox 360: at 60 fps they were half as long, and
looked brighter (GitHub issue #10). Thanks to jaswinprakash for the report, and to victorgbd,
whose Android port of another Most Wanted recompilation found the cause.
    • Pause menu > Performance Tuning: each slider has its own name again (Steering, Handling, Brakes,
Ride Height, Aerodynamics, Nitrous, Turbo or Supercharger) instead of "Steering" on every row
      (GitHub issue #8).

    • The hitch: the game's main loop runs a couple of frames ahead of the screen. When one of its
frames took longer, SpeedBreaker gave it two or three steps of game time and the next ones
none, while the screen still showed one frame per refresh. A frame the screen shows for one
refresh now runs one step, and the game's speed is unchanged. Measured on a Steam Machine at
60 Hz: such frames went from 43 in two minutes of driving to none.
    • The shadows: the game draws cars, walls and tunnel roofs into its sun shadow map as plain
solid shapes, which on the Xbox 360 run no pixel shader. SpeedBreaker ran the trees'
leaf-cutting shader on them too, and it threw them all away. Checked against real Xbox 360
footage of the same race: the car's shadow on the barriers, the shade past buildings, and a
steadily shaded car in tunnels. Sunlit roads are as bright as in v0.1.1 and v0.1.2.
    • The light trails: the game draws them from where the car was over its last two frames, and
the Xbox 360 races at 30 fps, so at 60 fps they covered half the distance. They now span the
same time as on the 360. At Frame Rate 30 nothing changes.
    • The tuning labels: the recompiled code looked up each row's name in a table that had lost
all but its first entry. The same recompilation fault touched two other tables, one of them
the Rap Sheet's Cost to State figures; both now match the Xbox 360's code too.

    Windows and Android Coming soon

The two SteamOS files are not interchangeable: the arm64 one is for the Steam Frame only, and the
x86-64 one doesn't run on the Frame. Each download has a .sha256 file next to it (see Checksums
    below).

All downloads are built from this release's source, commit b49fc32. The first line of the
game's log, and Settings > Advanced, say SpeedBreaker v0.1.3 (b49fc32).

The Source code archives that GitHub adds hold SpeedBreaker's own source, with no game code or
data. Building from them needs your own disc; see
    Building from source.

iPhone and iPad: the experimental IPA

SpeedBreaker-0.1.3-ios.ipa is signed by nobody: a sideloading tool such as AltStore signs it
with your own Apple Account and installs it.

The game raced at 60 fps with sunlit roads, the
car's hard shadow on the barrier beside it, and the car shaded inside a tunnel. In a 60 Hz
display test, no frame jumped ahead or froze (18 and 11 did before the fix). The Steam Deck
wasn't reachable for this release's test.
    • arm64: on a Steam Frame (SteamOS 0.3.0), outside the headset. The game raced at 58.6 fps
with sunlit roads and the car's hard shadow; over a race, frames that froze went from 35 to
none, and the game's speed was unchanged.
    • Mac: on a MacBook Pro (M1 Pro, macOS 27.0.1). The game raced at about 60 fps with sunlit
roads, the car's shadow on the barrier, a steadily shaded car in a tunnel, and light trails at
the Xbox 360's length. On macOS 15.6.1 (Sequoia), in a virtual machine on a Mac Studio, it
installed and raced at about 60 fps.
    • Updating from v0.1.2: on the Steam Machine, the Steam Frame and the Mac, v0.1.3 went over a
working v0.1.2 the way "How to update" says. The game used the existing install without
reinstalling it and showed What's new once; on the Mac, a setting changed in v0.1.2 was kept.
    • Check for Updates reached GitHub and answered correctly on the Mac, in the macOS 15
virtual machine and on the Steam Frame.
    • iPhone and iPad IPA: built and checked (its version, its two entitlements, its license
notices, no personal data), but not installed on a device yet; see above.

    1. Open the settings (F1; Back + Start on a controller; on a Steam Deck hold View and press Menu;
on a Steam Frame press Menu + View; a three-finger tap on iPhone and iPad), go to
Advanced and choose Save Bug Report.
    2. A notice says where the zip file went: usually your Desktop (on SteamOS, pick it up in Desktop
Mode, or in the Desktop app on a Steam Frame), or the SpeedBreaker folder in the Files app on
iPhone and iPad. Its name says which version you're running, for example
speedbreaker-bug-report-v0.1.3-<date>_<time>.zip.

    What's new

    • Internal Resolution 1.5x (1080p), in Settings > Graphics: a much sharper picture than 1x, with a
little over half the pixels of 2x: for a GPU with room above 1x but not for 2x. Thanks to the
Reddit player who asked for it.
    • Laptops with two GPUs: the game now runs on the dedicated graphics card (NVIDIA or AMD), not on
the one built into the processor. On Linux with NVIDIA's driver, the launcher also turns on
NVIDIA's PRIME render offload: thanks to lydacious for the idea and the first version (GitHub
      pull request #6).
    • Portable mode on Steam Deck, Steam Machine and Linux: put a file named portable.txt next to
speedbreaker.sh, and SpeedBreaker keeps your settings, saves, logs and caches in that folder,
and installs the game there too. Move or copy the whole folder to another machine and play on
      (GitHub issue #1).
    • Taller and wider screens: the sun's glare is round again (it was stretched on the Steam Deck,
4:3 and 3:2 screens, and wider on ultrawides); no faint line of a letterboxed movie shows in the
black past the 16:9 picture; and the race results screen no longer shows the race behind it past
      its 16:9 picture.
    • iPhone: after a screenshot, the picture no longer shrinks into a corner of the screen.
    • Experimental: an IPA for iPhone and iPad, to sideload with your own Apple Account (see below).

    • 1.5x renders 2.25 times the pixels of 1x, where 2x renders 4 times. Auto still chooses
between whole scales (1x, 2x, 3x, or 3x2 on an ultrawide), as before. On the iPhone 18 Pro Max,
1.5x holds 60 fps, but on a cable it reached iOS's "serious" heat level in about nine minutes
(1x did in about six); Frame Rate Auto then drops to 30.
    • Two GPUs: the game picks a dedicated GPU over a built-in one, and of two alike the one with
more video memory. This hasn't been confirmed on a real two-GPU laptop yet. The log's [video] Vulkan devices: line lists every GPU it found, the one it
uses, and why. To use another, put NFSMW_GPU=<its number or part of its name> in the launch
options, e.g. NFSMW_GPU=intel %command%. On a Steam Deck, Steam Machine, Steam Frame, Mac,
iPhone or iPad (one GPU each) nothing changes.
    • Portable mode: making portable.txt yourself starts fresh. To bring your current settings,
saves and installed game along, run ~/Games/SpeedBreaker/speedbreaker.sh --portable on in
Konsole instead; --portable off copies them back. Both copy and never delete. Keep the folder
on internal storage or a drive formatted by SteamOS. Not on the Mac, where an app keeps its data
      in the Mac's own folders.
    • The IPA: see "iPhone and iPad: the experimental IPA" below.
    • After a macOS, SteamOS or graphics driver update, the first drive can stutter for a moment while
the game rebuilds its shaders for the new system. It happens once, and the game's log now says
      so.

The game started from the new install and raced
at 60 fps with sunlit roads; Internal Resolution 1.5x raced at 60 fps too; portable mode was
turned on and off with --portable. The Steam Deck wasn't reachable for this release's test.
    • arm64: on a Steam Frame (SteamOS 0.3.0), outside the headset. The game started from the new
install and raced at 58 fps with sunlit roads, as v0.1.1 did; with portable.txt its data and
      caches stayed in the folder.
    • Mac: on a MacBook Pro (M1 Pro, macOS 27.0.1). The game played its intro and raced at about
60 fps with sunlit roads, filled the 16:10 screen, and rendered 1.5x correctly. On macOS 15.6.1
(Sequoia), in a virtual machine on a Mac Studio, it installed and raced at about 60 fps.
    • Updating from v0.1.1: on the Steam Machine, the Steam Frame and the Mac, v0.1.2 went over a working v0.1.1
the way "How to update" says. The game used the existing install without reinstalling it and
showed What's new once; on the Mac, a setting changed in v0.1.1 was kept.

    Known issues and limits

    • Reported after v0.1.1, not changed in this release:
      • in the pause menu's Performance Tuning, every row is labelled "Steering" (issue #8; each
row's help text is right, and the sliders work). The cause is found, and the fix comes in the
        next update;
      • a small hitch every few seconds that the frame-time graph doesn't show (issue #9): being
        looked into.
    • Sun shadows of cars, walls and tunnel roofs are missing (comments in issue #3): cars don't
cast their hard shadow in sunlight, and inside tunnels a car flickers between sunlight and tree
shadows instead of staying in shade. That's a SpeedBreaker bug, found after this release (the
shadow pass ran a leftover shader that threw those shapes away), and the fix comes in the next
      update.
The Frame's file manager can't unpack the download: use the Konsole
command in the setup steps. v0.1.2 needs a current SteamOS on the Frame (September 2026 or
later): if it says GLIBCXX_3.4.34 not found, update SteamOS.

    1. Open the settings (F1; Back + Start on a controller; on a Steam Deck hold View and press Menu;
on a Steam Frame press Menu + View; a three-finger tap on iPhone and iPad), go to
Advanced and choose Save Bug Report.
    2. A notice says where the zip file went: usually your Desktop (on SteamOS, pick it up in Desktop
Mode, or in the Desktop app on a Steam Frame), or the SpeedBreaker folder in the Files app on
iPhone and iPad. Its name says which version you're running, for example
speedbreaker-bug-report-v0.1.2-<date>_<time>.zip.

    What's new

    • The Steam Deck and 16:10 Macs fill the screen: a slightly taller view, with the HUD kept at
16:9. Settings > Display > Aspect Ratio > 16:9 brings the bars back.
    • Sunlit roads and correct shadows. A bug in the shadow map left every road in shade, on every
device: the roads are now as bright as on the Xbox 360, and the line between shade and sun that
followed the car is gone (GitHub issue #3). Thanks to the Reddit tester who spotted it.
    • Cutscene bars: the police video camera in the career intro, and the intro's black frames, now
cover the whole screen on taller and wider screens.
    • macOS 15 Sequoia support: the Mac app runs on macOS 15 or later (v0.1.0 needed macOS 26). On
macOS 26 it runs exactly as before.
    • Linux startup crash fixes: no crash at startup on graphics cards without Resizable BAR (NVIDIA),
and none expected on Intel's Linux driver (GitHub issue #2).
    • Choose a folder... in the installer: put the game in any folder you like (GitHub issue #1).
    • Check for Updates, in Settings > Advanced.
    • A cleaner Linux folder: speedbreaker.sh is the only thing at the top to run, and the program
      moved into lib/.

    • Choose a folder... is on the installer's last page. An empty folder is used as it is; one that
already holds files gets a new SpeedBreaker Game folder inside. The game remembers the folder,
and says so if its drive isn't connected. On SteamOS the folder picker opens only in Desktop
Mode: in Game Mode, switch to Desktop Mode and choose the folder there, or run
speedbreaker.sh --install <image> --dest <folder> from Konsole in Desktop Mode (or over SSH).
    • Check for Updates asks GitHub whether a newer SpeedBreaker is out. If one is, it shows what
changed, opens the download page, and shows that page as a QR code to scan with a phone (for
Steam Deck Game Mode and the Steam Frame, where no browser may open). Nothing is checked online
unless you press Check for Updates. GitHub's Watch > Custom > Releases tells you too.
    • Steam Deck, Steam Machine, Steam Frame and Linux: always start the game with speedbreaker.sh, as
your Steam shortcut does. The program in lib/ can't pick its libraries on its own. Unpacked over
v0.1.0, the first start removes v0.1.0's program from the top of the folder.

The full list of changes is in CHANGELOG.md.

Which file is for my device?

Mac with Apple silicon, macOS 15 or later SpeedBreaker-macos.dmg Mac
iPhone and iPad No download: you build it yourself with Xcode iPhone and iPad
    Windows and Android Coming soon

The two SteamOS files are not interchangeable: the arm64 one is for the Steam Frame only, and the
x86-64 one doesn't run on the Frame. Each download has a .sha256 file next to it (see Checksums
    below).

All three downloads are built from this release's source, commit 05838d6. The first line of
the game's log, and Settings > Advanced, say SpeedBreaker v0.1.1 (05838d6).

The Source code archives that GitHub adds hold SpeedBreaker's own source, with no game code or
data. Building from them needs your own disc; see
    Building from source.

    How these downloads were tested

Each download attached here was tested before release. It was unpacked or opened as the setup
steps say, with a fresh home folder, and the game was installed through the installer from a disc
    image:

    • x86-64: on a Steam Deck OLED (SteamOS 3.9.2) and a Steam Machine (SteamOS 3.8). The game
then started from the new install and reached a race, with sunlit roads. On the Deck the picture
filled the whole screen, and the police video camera's bars covered it edge to edge.
    • arm64: on a Steam Frame (SteamOS 0.3.0), outside the headset. The game then started from
the new install and reached a race, with sunlit roads.
    • Mac: on a MacBook Pro (M1 Pro, macOS 26.5.1). The game then played its intro and reached
the first race. On macOS 15.6.1 (Sequoia), in a virtual machine on a Mac Studio, it installed
with the keyboard and mouse and raced in full screen. After release, this same download was also
verified on macOS 27.0.1 (MacBook Pro M1 Pro): install, race, full screen, Check for Updates and
updating from v0.1.0 all work, at the same speed as on macOS 26.
    • Updating from v0.1.0: on the Steam Deck, the Steam Machine, the Steam Frame and the Mac,
v0.1.1 went over a working v0.1.0 the way "How to update" says. The game used the existing
install without reinstalling it and showed What's new once; on the Mac, a setting changed in
      v0.1.0 was kept.
    • Check for Updates reached GitHub and answered correctly on the Mac, in the macOS 15 virtual
machine and on the Steam Frame.

    Known issues and limits

    • Mac, the first time you open it: the app isn't notarized by Apple, so macOS refuses to
open it and offers Done or Move to Trash. Click Done. Then go to System Settings >
Privacy & Security, scroll down to the message that SpeedBreaker was blocked, click Open

, and confirm with Open Anyway and your password (or Touch ID).
    • Steam Deck OLED: set the refresh rate to 60 Hz (Quick Access > Performance). At 90 Hz

run ~/Games/SpeedBreaker/speedbreaker.sh --install <image> --dest <folder> from Konsole. Use
a folder on the internal storage or on a card formatted by SteamOS, or Game Mode won't find
        the game.
      • Game Mode only sees SD cards and USB drives formatted by SteamOS. For others, copy the image
        into Downloads from Desktop Mode.
      • The install takes about two minutes on a Steam Deck, and under a minute on a Steam Machine.
      • Docked, or on a Steam Machine, set the shortcut's Game Resolution to Native.
    • Steam Frame: it plays as a big flat screen in the headset; it is not a VR mode. Set Display >

game keeps its full speed). The Frame's file manager can't unpack the download: use the Konsole
command in the setup steps. Add to Steam from the file manager and the installer driven by the
Frame's controllers haven't been walked through in the headset yet, so if a step looks different
on your Frame, please open an issue.
    • Linux:
      • Always start it with speedbreaker.sh. Started on its own, the program in lib/ fails on
most systems with a message such as GLIBC_2.44 not found.
      • The x86-64 download has only been tested on SteamOS. The startup crash fixes for cards
without Resizable BAR and for Intel's driver (issue #2) were tested on SteamOS by making the
game face the same memory limits; they haven't run on an NVIDIA or Intel GPU yet. Whether
v0.1.1 starts for you or not, a note in issue #2 helps.
      • Choose a folder... needs a file chooser portal or zenity; without one, install with
        --dest.
      • It needs a CPU with AVX2 (Intel Haswell, AMD Excavator or Zen, or newer) and Vulkan 1.2
        graphics.
    • iPhone and iPad: there's no download. You build it with Xcode and sign it with your own Apple
      developer account: scripts/ios/README.md
      walks you through it.

    Reporting a bug

on a Steam Frame press Menu + View; a three-finger tap on iPhone and iPad), go to
Advanced and choose Save Bug Report.
    2. A notice says where the zip file went: usually your Desktop (on SteamOS, pick it up in Desktop
Mode, or in the Desktop app on a Steam Frame), or the SpeedBreaker folder in the Files app on
iPhone and iPad. Its name says which version you're running, for example

Steam Machine, Steam Frame, Linux and Mac.

No game files are included. You need a backup (a disc image) of your own USA (NTSC-U) Xbox
    360 disc
. The installer checks every file and installs the game. SpeedBreaker is a fan project
by project(u), not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Electronic Arts Inc., the Need for
    Speed brand or Valve Corporation.

Which file is for my device?

    Device Download Setup
Steam Deck, Steam Machine and Linux PCs (x86-64) SpeedBreaker-steamos-x86_64.tar.xz Steam Deck and Steam Machine, Linux
Steam Frame (arm64) SpeedBreaker-steamos-arm64.tar.xz Steam Frame
Mac with Apple silicon, macOS 26 or later SpeedBreaker-macos.dmg Mac
iPhone and iPad No download: you build it yourself with Xcode iPhone and iPad
    Windows and Android Coming soon

The two SteamOS files are not interchangeable: the arm64 one is for the Steam Frame only, and the
x86-64 one doesn't run on the Frame. Each download has a .sha256 file next to it (see Checksums
    below).

All three downloads are built from this release's source, commit a6ade41. The first line of
the game's log, and Settings > Advanced, say SpeedBreaker v0.1.0 (a6ade41).

The Source code archives that GitHub adds hold SpeedBreaker's own source, with no game code or
data. Building from them needs your own disc; see
    Building from source.

    What you get

    • Up to 4K: the 3D scene renders at 1x, 2x or 3x the console's 720p, and Auto picks one for your
      screen and device.
    • Ultrawide screens get a wider view instead of a stretched one, and 4:3 and 3:2 screens a taller
one, with the HUD and the rear-view mirror where they belong.
    • Up to 60 fps on a 60 Hz display, a steady 30 at full game speed, or Auto, which drops to 30 only
while the device is hot or can't hold 60.
    • The original look: the low sun's glare, correct colours on Apple devices, proper car paint and
mirror reflections, and distant textures that don't shimmer.
    • A guided installer: it finds your disc image, checks that it's the right game and verifies all
49 files as it copies them.
    • Controllers work as an Xbox 360 pad, with hot-plugging and rumble. The keyboard works too.
    • A settings menu that pauses the game: F1, Back + Start (View + Menu on the Steam Deck and Steam
Frame), or a three-finger tap on iPhone and iPad. Every change applies at once.
    • Settings > Advanced > Save Bug Report puts the logs, your settings and a screenshot in one zip
file. Nothing is uploaded: you decide what to send.
    • From this version on, the first start after an update shows what changed, once. Nothing is
      checked online.

The full list of changes is in CHANGELOG.md.

The game
then started from the new install and reached a race.
    • arm64: on a Steam Frame (SteamOS 0.3.0), outside the headset. The game then started from
the new install and reached its menus.
    • Mac: on a MacBook Pro (M1 Pro, macOS 26.5). The game then played its intro and reached the
      title screen.

Each file has its .sha256 next to it on this page. Download both into the same folder, then
run sha256sum -c SpeedBreaker-steamos-x86_64.tar.xz.sha256 on SteamOS or Linux, or
    shasum -a 256 -c SpeedBreaker-macos.dmg.sha256 on a Mac (with your file's name). It should

      • You do this once per download. Control-click > Open no longer skips it.
      • The app isn't damaged. If macOS ever says it is, check the download against its .sha256 and
        download it again.
      • Apple silicon only, macOS 26 or later.
    • Steam Deck OLED: set the refresh rate to 60 Hz (Quick Access > Performance). At 90 Hz
the game stutters. Leave the Framerate Limit off. The thin bars on the Deck's 16:10 screen are
intended.
Frame Rate to 30 fps for smooth play (the headset's compositor shares the graphics chip; the
game keeps its full speed). The Frame's file manager can't unpack the download: use the Konsole
command in the setup steps. Add to Steam from the file manager and the installer driven by the
Frame's controllers haven't been walked through in the headset yet, so if a step looks different
on your Frame, please open an issue.
    • Linux: the x86-64 download has only been tested on SteamOS. Other distributions and NVIDIA
or Intel graphics are untested; reports are welcome. It needs a CPU with AVX2 (Intel Haswell,
AMD Excavator or Zen, or newer) and Vulkan 1.2 graphics.
    • Game versions: only the USA (NTSC-U) Xbox 360 disc is supported. PAL and Japanese discs,
re-releases, Games on Demand packages and the PC version aren't, and no title update is used.
    • Not in this release: importing Xbox 360 saves, button remapping, mouse control in the game,
more than 60 fps (the game's own cap), and Windows and Android builds.
    • iPhone and iPad: there's no download. You build it with Xcode and sign it with your own Apple
      developer account: scripts/ios/README.md
      walks you through it.

    Reporting a bug

    1. Open the settings (F1; Back + Start on a controller; on a Steam Deck hold View and press Menu;
on a Steam Frame press Menu + View; a three-finger tap on iPhone and iPad), go to
Advanced and choose Save Bug Report.
    2. A notice says where the zip file went: usually your Desktop (on SteamOS, pick it up in Desktop
Mode, or in the Desktop app on a Steam Frame), or the SpeedBreaker folder in the Files app on
iPhone and iPad. Its name says which version you're running, for example
      speedbreaker-bug-report-v0.1.0-<date>_<time>.zip. Nothing is uploaded.
