After updating, check your autoload settings. If a payload manager or autoloader starts Tailscale with the console, make sure it starts the new version, or the old one comes back after a restart. The easy way: keep that copy under a fixed name such as tailscale.elf and save the new release over it, or name its path under Payload file to keep up to date in the settings so the Install button replaces it for you.

Updating: from 0.6.1 or later, press Install on the status page. From 0.6.0, install v0.7.0 with the Install button first, or download tailscale-0.7.1.elf and send it to the ELF loader (port 9021). From anything older, send the file by hand.

    New

    • Wake a PC at home. A sleeping PC cannot be reached over Tailscale, but the console is on the same home network and can send it a Wake-on-LAN packet. Add the PC's name and MAC address under Wake a device at home; then, from wherever you are, open the status page over Tailscale and press Wake. The PC needs Wake-on-LAN turned on. The console reports sending the packets, but this has not been tried against a sleeping PC yet; reports are welcome.
    • Download diagnostics. One button under Actions gives you a single text file with the logs, version, firmware and settings to attach to a bug report. E-mail addresses, your tailnet's name, public IP addresses, keys and the password are removed; device names and tailnet addresses are not, so read it before posting.
    • Test a connection. Each line under Reach a device from this PS5 and each game streaming host has a test link. It tries the connection the way the PS5 would and says what happened: it answers, the device is there but nothing listens on that port, no answer (off, asleep or firewalled), or no device with that name.
    • "What this does, and what it does not". A short note on the status page, opened before the first login: other devices can reach the PS5, the PS5 reaches devices through an address on the console, and it is not a full VPN.

Full instructions are in the README.

Updating: from 0.6.0 or later, press Install on the status page. From anything older, download tailscale-0.7.0.elf and send it to the ELF loader (port 9021).

    New

    • Reach a device from the PS5. A new panel on the status page for the thing people ask about most: the PS5's browser and apps cannot open tailnet addresses, but they can reach a device through an address on the console itself. Add the device and the port, press Save, and the page shows the address to use on the PS5, for example 127.0.0.1:8096. This replaces the "Extra forwards" text box in the settings; existing forwards are kept and show up in the panel.
    • See how each device is connected. Under a device's name the page says whether the console reaches it directly or relayed through one of Tailscale's relay servers, which is slower. test measures the connection and shows the round-trip time. The first thing to look at when a stream or Remote Play stutters.
    • The page shows where names are looked up ("Name lookups"): the DNS payload on the console, your router, or a public resolver.

    Changed

    • A forward can no longer be put on a port of the console that is already in use, such as the status page's own.
    • The project's tests now run on GitHub for every change.

    About the files

    • tailscale-0.7.0.elf is the payload. tailscale.elf is the same file under the old name; it is there so that 0.6.0, which only knows that name, can install this release with its Install button. Download either one.
    • The .sig files are the signatures the Install button checks; you do not need them.

Full instructions are in the README.

Updating from 0.6.0 or earlier has to be done by hand: download tailscale-0.6.2.elf and send it to the ELF loader (port 9021). From 0.6.1 on, use Install on the status page.

    Changed

    • The settings hint for Payload file to keep up to date and the README now recommend keeping the autoload copy under a fixed name without a version. An update installed from the page replaces that file's contents and leaves its name alone, so the autoload entry keeps working.

Everything else is as in v0.6.1.

DieMitchell released this 2026-10-07 01:00:21 +02:00 | 5 commits to main since this release

Updating from 0.6.0 or earlier: you need to update this one manually. The release file is now named with its version (tailscale-0.6.1.elf), which the Install button in 0.6.0 does not look for. Download the file and send it to the ELF loader (port 9021) as before; login and settings are kept. From 0.6.1 on, the Install button on the status page works for later releases.

After updating, check your autoload settings. If a payload manager or autoloader starts Tailscale with the console, make sure it starts the new file. Either replace the old file with the new one under the old name, or point your autoload entry at the new file. Otherwise the old version comes back after a restart.

    Changed

    • The release file carries its version in its name: tailscale-0.6.1.elf. The .sig file next to it is for the Install button; you do not need to download it.
    • No DNS payload needed. The daemon used to rely on a DNS payload running on the console (127.0.0.1:53) to look up Tailscale's servers. It now uses the first of these that answers: a DNS payload on the console, your router, or a public resolver (1.1.1.1, 8.8.8.8, 9.9.9.9). The log says which in a line starting with DNS:. Only the daemon's own lookups are affected, not the console's.
    • The status page reminds you about autoload next to the Install button and before installing: an update from the page replaces the running copy, not the file your payload manager starts with the console, unless you name that file under Payload file to keep up to date in the settings.

Full instructions are in the README.

    New

    • Send files to the console with Taildrop. Send a file from any of your own devices (share menu on a phone, "Send with Tailscale" on a desktop, or tailscale file cp). It lands in /data/tailscale/received, the console shows a notification, and the status page lists it with a download link. Sending files from the console is not implemented.
    • Install updates from the status page. From the next release on, the update notice has an Install button. It downloads the release, checks that it is signed with this project's release key, and starts it; login and settings are kept. Nothing is installed without pressing the button. If your payload manager starts tailscale.elf at boot, put that file's path under Payload file to keep up to date in the settings so the update replaces it too.
    • "Only my own devices." A new setting limits who on the tailnet can reach the console (every forwarded port, Remote Play and the status page) to devices logged in as the same user. Other users' devices and devices shared into your tailnet are turned away. Off by default.
    • Key expiry warning. The page shows when the console's Tailscale key expires and warns two weeks ahead; the console shows a notification as well. To avoid expiry, choose Disable key expiry for the console in the Tailscale admin console.
    • A notification when a newer release exists, once per release, in addition to the notice on the page.
    • Start-up problems leave a trace. If the payload cannot start it now says why in a notification and in /data/tailscale/launcher.log. Until now a payload manager would simply show nothing. If Tailscale does not start on your console, please attach that file to your report.

    Changed

    • Click an address on the status page to copy it.
    • The device list no longer breaks words in the middle on phones.

    Upgrading

Replace tailscale.elf wherever you keep it, or send the new one to the ELF loader (port 9021) while the old one runs. The login and settings are kept. From 0.6.0 you can install 0.7.0 with the Install button on the status page, and later releases from there. (0.6.1 and 0.6.2 cannot be installed that way from 0.6.0, because their files were renamed; skip them or install them by hand.)

tailscale.elf.sig is the signature the Install button checks; you do not need to download it.

    A small hardening release.

    Changed

    • Connections from the tailnet are now only passed to the console's services when they are addressed to the console's own tailnet addresses. Nothing else reached them before, so nothing was exposed; the check is now explicit instead of relying on that.
    • The README explains why the console does not offer itself as an exit node: it is doable, but it would be slow and would drop out whenever the console goes into rest mode or reboots.

Everything else is as in v0.5.1.

Device list: groups, search and filters

    • Grouped by kind. Devices of your tailnet, devices shared with you, and VPN exit servers each get their own group.
    • VPN exit servers stay out of the way. If your tailnet has a VPN add-on such as Mullvad, its exit servers are counted but not listed until you tick Show VPN exit servers. (#1)
    • Search by name, address, OS, tag or place.
    • Online only toggle.
    • Exit node status. Devices that can be used as an exit node are marked.
    • The device count and the game streaming host suggestions no longer include exit servers.

The grouping of VPN exit servers has been tested with made-up data only; reports from tailnets that have the add-on are welcome.

    New

    • Password for the status page. Set one under Settings and everything that shows or changes something asks for it: status, logs, settings, log in/out, stop, uninstall. The console's own browser is not asked. Without a password the page works as before.
    • Settings on the status page. Name, forwarded ports, blocked ports, forwards, proxy, priority and update checks can be changed from the page; the config file no longer has to be edited by hand. Most changes take effect at once, and the page says which ones need Tailscale to be started again.
    • Several game streaming hosts. Add more than one Sunshine host, each with its own port. Hosts that share a port cannot be used at the same time, so give each Sunshine a different port.
    • Update notice. The page says when a newer release exists. It only tells you; nothing is downloaded. Can be turned off in the settings.
    • Priority setting. If a stream stutters under a demanding game, set Priority to High and start Tailscale again. The default is unchanged (lowest).
    • Favicon, and the device list on the status page can be collapsed.

    Changed

    • The HTTP proxy is off by default. Turn it on in the settings if you use it. An existing config keeps its setting.
    • Uninstall now also removes the home screen icon.
    • After the console's network is reconfigured, Tailscale is asked to rebind straight away.

    Tested

    • A short stay in rest mode: Tailscale carried on by itself and was back on the tailnet within a second of waking. The console is not reachable while it sleeps. Hours in rest mode have not been tried.

    Upgrading

Replace tailscale.elf wherever you keep it, or send the new one to the ELF loader (port 9021) while the old one runs. The login and settings are kept.

    Simplified installation

There is now a single file, tailscale.elf, and no installer.

    • Send tailscale.elf to your console's ELF loader (port 9021) and Tailscale starts. Open http://<console-ip>:8090 to log in.
    • The first run adds the Tailscale icon to the home screen by itself.
    • To have it start with the console, add tailscale.elf to your payload manager or autoloader like any other payload.
    • To update, replace the file. Sending it while Tailscale is running replaces the running copy; the login and settings are kept.

    Changed

    • Uninstall on the status page now logs the console out, deletes /data/tailscale (login, settings, logs) and stops Tailscale. Delete the home screen icon from the home screen, and remove the payload from your payload manager if you added it there.

    Upgrading from an earlier version

    • Use tailscale.elf from this release wherever you ran the installer or the old tailscale.elf from. Your login is kept.
    • The old installer left a copy at /data/tailscale/tailscale.elf (and v0.2.1 another under your autoloader's folder). They are no longer used or updated; replace or delete them.

Everything else is as in v0.4.0, including Remote Play and Moonlight/Sunshine forwarding. Full instructions are in the README.

    New

    • Remote Play over Tailscale. The console's Remote Play service is now reachable at its tailnet address: the daemon forwards UDP 9295, 9296, 9297 and 9302 (TCP 9295 was already forwarded). Add the console to your Remote Play client by its tailnet address and connect from anywhere, with no port forwarding on your router. Tested and working with Chiaki, and with Asobi on iOS and Android.
    • New udpPorts setting in config.json lists the console's UDP ports reachable from the tailnet. The default is the four Remote Play ports; [] turns inbound UDP off.
    • The status page shows what is reachable from the tailnet.

    Install or upgrade

Download tailscale-installer.elf and send it to your console's ELF loader (port 9021). Upgrading keeps your login and settings. Full instructions are in the README.
