v0.0.1 - Initial Validation Pre-Release
released this
2026-10-08 13:03:33 +02:00 | 9 commits to main since this releaseFrameloader 0.0.1
This is the first public build. It's mostly here to validate the idea and the release pipeline, so expect rough edges.
Frameloader sideloads apps onto a Steam Frame and adds them to your Steam library, ready to launch from the headset. It drives Valve's own SteamOS devkit tooling over your local network.
What's in it
- Android apps (APK): run under Lepton, Valve's Android layer, each in its own container so save data persists. This is the path tested on a real Frame.
- Windows apps (.exe, zip, or folder): run through Proton, with the program detected from the file headers. A Proton must already be installed on the Frame.
- Linux ARM64 builds: start natively. Only self-contained builds work.
- Pairing: approve a prompt in the headset, or connect with your Developer Mode password. Works with any hostname or IP.
- Finds your headset on the local network automatically.
- Library names: installed titles are renamed in Steam so they show your app's name instead of "Devkit Game: …".
- Update check: a banner appears when a newer version is out. You can turn the check off in Settings.
- Developer tools: Android logs and an activity log, off by default.
Known limits
- Only Android installs have been tested on hardware. Windows and Linux installs, and whether title names survive Steam re-syncing its library, are still unverified.
- Builds are not code-signed:
- macOS: right-click the app and choose Open the first time, or run
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Frameloader.app. - Windows: SmartScreen will warn before the installer runs.
- macOS: right-click the app and choose Open the first time, or run
- A failed reinstall can remove the previous copy of that title.
- 64-bit x86 Linux builds can't run on the Frame and are refused.
Before you start
On the headset, turn on Steam Settings → System → Developer Mode, then set a password under Developer.
